acc christmas: wide-screen edition

I love watching movies. I have to admit that I'm not real big on getting an upset stomach from the excessive butter on my popcorn and the Coke and Sprite mix that I’ve made since 1992. But it's part of the experience.  (Maybe I'll switch to eggnog for the next few weeks ...)

It’s almost always more fun watching a movie with someone else. That way you both can laugh together (I’m still giggling about the movie Elf); cry together (ala The Notebook) and get your adrenaline movin' (can you say Jason Bourne?). When you watch a movie, you’re experiencing something together; something you can both talk about; something you can both offer your perspective on. It’s a way to connect with each other and have dialog.

Connecting with people isn’t always easy. I’ve found that the best way to have a conversation with someone is to talk about something that you both have in common; something you can both relate to. Maybe a movie?

Sometimes when it comes talking about God or Jesus, people seem to shut down. They’re not real open to talking about something that is so personal. Most people today hold the perspective that, "God & Jesus talk are good for you, but it’s not my gig. You believe what you want to believe, and I’ll believe what I want to believe." They immediately create a barrier and cup their hands over their ears and start saying, "la, la, la, la, la, la …"

I wonder if we approached the conversation a little differently, we might see different results. I wonder if people would be more open to the taboo "Jesus talk" if there were some common ground established; a bridge built; a way to connect with people; then just maybe; just maybe they’ll dialog about it.

I think our December Message Series will help start the conversation. We’re calling it "ACC Christmas: Wide-screen Edition." We’re going to look at some themes from four popular Christmas movies to address issues such as contentment, depression, giving, and personal fulfillment. I hope you’ll consider joining the conversation.

It’s time to bust out the extra butter …

and eggnog.
