Christmas time was awesome when I was a kid.I loved to decorate the tree. I also had a few years where I had the “official” responsibility of wrapping the shredded garland around the 1970’s steel railing in the living room.Every year that stuff would become more and more bare.I would wrap the strands around my arm and go crazy decking the halls with boughs of folly. My Mom always told me it looked great.I’m not so sure.
Then there was the awesome stocking that my Aunt Sharon made me when I was a toddler. My folks still hang it up in their house to this day.
And then there was the mistletoe. It would dangle from a little elfish house with chimes that would always hang from the foyer chandelier.I couldn’t wait till the babysitter came so I could have an excuse for a Christmas smooch.
Playing that record over and over and over and over.I couldn’t get enough of it.
And I still can’t.And now our girls love it too.
And the cool thing is, that it was one of my Mom’s favorite records from when she was a kid!
I remember dancing with my Grandma Beecher in the living room while Grandpa sang along too.Four generations of great memories to songs that are just plain fun.
Jesus still is and will always be the Reason for the Season. At the same time, I’m convinced that as Christ-followers, we’re still allowed to have fun and have rich family traditions as part of our celebration of Christmas that aren’t specifically rooted in the birth of Christ. They’re not a distraction. They’re an accent.
