close the hood

There are two kinds of people in the world.  People who know how cars work.  And people who don’t.

I don’t know how my car works.

Yet somehow when it doesn’t work, I have to do what guys do.

Pop the hood.

It doesn’t matter that I don’t have a clue what I’m looking at.  I have to momentarily pretend that I DO know how cars work.

It just seems like the “man thing” to do.  A few moments later, I’ll close the hood and confidently tell Lara that something’s “definitely wrong” and that we’ll have to have it looked at.

Stating the obvious.  I’m pretty good at that.  There’s something comforting in uttering an observation that can’t be argued with.  It breeds confidence.

I don’t know HOW the car got that way.  It just did.  And now it just is.

Sometimes our relationship with Jesus is the same way.  We can’t always explain HOW Jesus makes us whole and complete.  We can’t always explain HOW the finer points of God work.

We just know that it DOES.

There was a blind man in the Bible who had just been healed by Jesus.  And there were a bunch of “spiritual” people who confronted the man and asked HOW he was healed by Jesus.  I love his answer.

"I don’t have a clue HOW I was healed.  What I DO know is that BEFORE I met Jesus, I was blind and couldn’t see and AFTER I met Jesus, I CAN SEE!!!" (See John chapter 9 for the entire account.)

He stated the obvious.  And not one person could argue with him.  He told his confronters to look at the results of Jesus’ work in his life if they had any questions about whether Jesus could actually make a difference.

There are people who rationalize their way out of beginning a relationship with Jesus because they don’t think they’re good enough or knowledgeable enough about how Jesus works.  They want to try to figure Him out and understand Him better.  Other people simply don’t care and look for another car in the lot.

I don’t have all the answers of how Jesus works.  I just know that He does work.  I think I’ll close the hood.
