daddy-daughter moments

Making time for my children has always been a challenge for me.  I've found that I have to be intentional about creating Daddy-Daughter Moments (DDM).

Each December, one of the ways we create a DDM is to hang out together in the evening before bed (after teeth are brushed).  We spend time reading a small piece of the Christmas Story together through a cool Advent Book with doors on each page.  The doors are wonderfully decorated and open to reveal a spectacular illustration of that evening's Christmas reading.  All centered on Jesus' birth.  Cambria (the youngest) opens the doors, as Fiona and Flannery take turns reading behind the doors.

Each night we start with the first door and read all the way up to the day/door corresponding to that calendar day of December.  After that, we pray together and the kids snuggle down in bed for the night.

We do this all the way through Christmas morning where we open the final door and pray together and sing Happy Birthday to Jesus before we open our gifts for each other.

Of course, no Christmas DDM would be complete without some great Christmas music playing in the background.  We're all looking forward to that final door tomorrow morning...

Of course, there are some nights when we aren't able to do it, yet we catch up the next night.  The important thing is ...

We had a DDM.
It's been a rich tradition in our home that is just one of many carry-overs of similar traditions that we experienced as kids.  What an awesome example my own Dad & Mom set for me and my sisters.

I still remember that mesmerizing pop-up book of the classic poem, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas ...  (I think my Dad was just as mesmerized ...)

I also remember when my pajamas & my haircut had to match my sisters too ....
