transitions & new beginnings

Sometimes we can’t wait for something to end.  Things like haircuts that are too short; humongous facial blemishes; car rides to far-away places like Pizza Hut; the extra splash of cologne that gags everyone at the office; and out-of-control screaming infants anywhere that happens to be the same place as me.

Sometimes we don’t want something to end.  Things like a great book or movie; the jeans that have been broken in just right after 5.5 years that are now worn out; the $6 bottle of hand soap from Bed Bath and Beyond (the kind with the little abrasive particles in there that exfoliate every ounce of healthy skin on your hands and face); the “little kid” stage of my children who are growing up faster than I prefer; and that great night of sleep that is never as long as I'd like.

Endings are actually transitions.  We mostly look at an ending as being the end or an abrupt break in some activity or season of our life.  But sometimes endings and beginnings aren’t as dramatic.

It might be an abrupt ending and new beginning.  It could be a subtle and less obvious transition in our life.

It might be a new beginning that we know we need to start, yet we struggle to hold on to that something in our life that we don’t want to end.

It might be a transition, change and new beginning that has been a long time coming.

What transitions are you considering as a new beginning dawns tonight at midnight?  I want to challenge you to not allow the cliche resolutions of yesteryear to happen for you.  Be intentional.  Make a committment.  Enter into an accountability relationship with someone whom you give permission to ask you how you're doing on your transition.  And then stick to it.

Life-change doesn't happen by accident.  A new beginning is up to us.  God gives each of us a choice to make.  Wanting a change isn't good enough.  We have to be in motion for God to do a work in us and through us.  The question is ....

Do we roll over and go back to sleep or do we get and get going on allowing God to do a work in us and through us?  He wants us to transition our lives towards growing more like Him.  The rooster is crowing.  A new year is starting.  Let's get going.
