drummin' for Jesus
| Last week I was jammin on the electronic drum set during the singing part of our worship service. My brother-in-law affectionately calls it 'drummin' for Jesus". I was groovin along when all of the sudden I heard someone in the first couple of rows counting out loud to the beat of the song. It was a little distracting as I could hear them hollering, "One, Two, Three, Four - One, Two, Three, Four". I thought, "Hmm, someone's really getting into the songs this week or they don't think the drummer can keep the rhythm correctly." And then I heard the sound of a roaring crowd. I thought, "Wow. Things are really getting hot in this week's service. I mean this is great stuff." Playing playing. Grooving grooving. "Still not sure why someone is counting the beats of the song so loudly though ..." Another roar of the crowd and more out-loud counting.... |

| And then I realized something. It was me. Or rather, it was the electronic drum set. I had accidentally smacked a button on the control pad with my sticks when I closed my eyes during a couple of groovy worshipful fills. The roaring crowd was the noise that I got when I smashed the crash cymbal. The out-loud counting was the computer voice for a special pre-programmed demo. And it was all coming through the sound system for the entire congregation to hear. And I thought it was the Spirit..... It was so wild that I was almost moved to spin my sticks and chuck them into the crowd. But I didn't. I didn't want to knock out the guy waiting to pray for the offering ... I'll be moonlighting again tomorrow morning playing drums for the part of our worship service that includes music, singing and playing instruments. Worship includes... 1. the proclamation, explanation and application of the Word of God. 2. the celebration and remembrance of the death of Jesus for the forgiveness of our sins. 3. the giving of our tithes and offerings unto the work of the Lord through the local church. (The church is not just another charity.) 4. the prayers of God's people in the form of petitions, praises, intercession and thanksgiving. 5. the singing and playing of instruments of God's people in praise and adoration. 6. the surrender of the hearts and minds of God's people in humility, awe and reverence of the Lord God Almighty. It's all about giving God glory. It's all about giving God honor. It's all about giving God praise. It's not about what I can get out of the service. It's about what I bring to God in corporate worship gathered with other people who love God too. It's all about Him. I'll try not to smack the wrong button or chuck my drum stick into the crowd .... Either way, I'm still drummin' for Jesus ... | |
